First of all I would like to do two things:
- Say "Welcome!" to all my new followers!
- Say "Thanks!" to my primary beta readers for Shadowed Stones Jen and Roseanne
I have Shadowed Stones out to beta readers now and plan to start working on compiling some query letters (*cringe/squeal*).
I haven't had much time this week to work on Three of Ivory. The good news is I got a lot of background work done over the long weekend. I have, however, been thinking about my three main characters.
That leads me to some feedback I would like to get from all of you. Two of my MC's are from a distant foreign land. I want to set them apart from the others in a subtle way. Do you think an uncommon eye color and skin tone (for the country the book takes place in) will set them apart enough?
Have you read Shannon Hale yet? If not you really need to get on that. In "The Goose Girl" the MC comes from a land where blonde and blues eyes in the norm then she travels to a place with darker features, so I would say yes. Also, maybe having them speak in accent?
ReplyDeleteThanks Jen. The Goose Girl is on my 2 read list. An accent is a great idea. I was also thinking of having them speak in their native tongue to eachother.
ReplyDeleteGoose Girl is great, bump it up a little on your list, and when you are ready for more, boy do I have a list!!!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about your question while dozing this afternoon and wondered about using the hair/skin tones, and throwing a few cultural differences into the mix. Something like Clothing, food, holiday celebrations. The concept of something being foreign to them. Just a random half asleep thought. :)
Thanks, those are good suggestions!
ReplyDeleteOoh, great question. I think language/dialect can go a long way toward establishing the differences between characters. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteGood luck querying! :D I think that differences in appearances would set them apart just fine. And like Elana said, accents would do a fantastic job of showing differences.
ReplyDeleteThanks Elana and Madeline! I had not thought of an accent - great idea.
ReplyDeleteWill they be able to dress slightly differently too, or will that be too much?
ReplyDeleteSarah, dressing differently is a great idea! Thanks!
