Flash Fiction

Using the Three Words: Dog, Death, Danger

Daddy says Toby went to heaven. In heaven there are lots of other dogs for him to play with.

Toby likes to play.

Mommy says death is not a sad thing. Mommy is always right. But I don't know what that means.

When Toby comes to visit I am going to play ball with him for a whole twenty minutes. But we have to play in the back yard. Mommy and daddy say we can't play by the street. They always shout - 'Stop! Danger!' when me or Toby gets close.

I'm hungry. I think I will have my cookie now.

  2. Here's my attempt :)

Nanny used to hush us up any time we let that word slip. She'd cringe a little despite our innocence then add, "Say nose bleed, love." She's from England, you know, so bloody doesn't mean the same thing apparently. I'm just a kid, so I guess I'll have to wait until I'm older to understand. I can't ask Nanny since she's long gone, and Daddy doesn't like to talk about it. He says it makes his eyes hurt before he turns his face away. He doesn't know I've seen him cryin'. Maybe if I could go into town after my chores here are done on the farm. The library might have something I can read that could explain it to me. For now though, with all the work left to do before harvest, England--and what they do there--might as well be as far away as the moon. I know won't be getting to learn any more about it any time soon.

  5. Mama called the way Poppa died a 'dog death'. It took me years to get brave enough to ask what that meant. Mama wasn't generally one for answering questions. She meant he just closed his eyes, went to sleep and never woke up again; like an old hound whose time is done.

Momma didn't cry when Poppa died. She kept it all inside. Never any danger of anyone knowing how she felt about anything.
"Ain't nobody's business but mine", she always said.
"Not even your daughter's?" I asked. But only in my head.
